Entertainment in rome
The Romans were bloodthirsty, for many years people of all social class came to arena to watch gladiators fight to the death. As the years went on, the fights became more bloody and interesting to watch as gladiators were pitted up against animals and obstacles at every corner. At the beginning of the battles, it was mainly slaves who have committed crimes who were contending to the fight. Later on, however, free men sign up and strive to win power and glory.
These games were huge in the 1st century BC all to 2nd century AD. Around 5th century the games declined because of the rise of Christianity. Women sometimes fought as gladiators, but it was often viewed as a joke. Many emperors were said to have preformed in the coliseum, although with minimal injury. Entertainment was bloody in Rome, and the gladiators are evidence of that. |
